"Carburetion Day" "Carburetion Day" is the name of the last official practice before the Indy 500. The name originally came from the fact that it was the final session where teams could tune their carburetors in conditions similar to those that might be encountered on race day. The name has remained despite the fact that no qualified car has used a carburetor since 1963. Our own "Carburetion Day" will take place on Saturday May 13th and will consist of free practice followed by a 50-lap practice race. Attendance is not required, but we strongly encourage everyone to attend -- especially those who have never started a 500 mile race before. This will be an invaluable opportunity to prepare for Sunday's race and maybe get some mistakes out of the way before the real thing. Please be aware that the aerodynamic effects of driving with more cars around you are quite important, causing understeer when you follow another car as well as oversteer when there is another close behind you. This has to be taken into account both in the setup and the driving. This will also be an opportunity to gauge your fuel usage and make sure you can finish the 500 mile race with the allotted amount.
