It wasn't that bad after all It didn't start too well, as the game crashed three times during qualifying. Juha then saved me with the advice to lower graphics which fixed it. I don't understand why the game can't handle better graphics settings, as utilisation of CPU and GPU on Ultra is somewhere between 30-60% without any spikes or bottlenecks, but whatever. At least it worked. It's just another AMS thing, I guess.
Thankfully there was enough time to post a half-decent lap which put me on the grid. It was close, but qualifying has never been my thing. To be very honest, I hate those qualifying practice runs. Slow outlap, just one attempt on Q tyres, repeat. Such a waste of time and effort. I hope the next version of the car will be more competetive and I won't have to worry about qualifying for the race.
Anyway, start from P25 was relatively smooth, some people spun out, some people were slower in the opening stages and I could pass them. It felt really good to be right behind Luke after a few laps, as he's clearly the faster Footwork driver. Then Niklas got into a little fight with the Footwork gang. It was fun to be a part of it and fun to watch it, too. Both Niklas and Luke have been a massive help in setting up the car. Fun fact - both have extremely different approach (ride height, stiffness of suspension, camber, pressures, diff settings, gears, etc), but I did exactly the same lap times with both Luke then started to pull away, as I had to save some fuel. And that's when the long duel with Ricardo started. I enjoyed all of it, the pressure was really high. Unfortunately, so was my (our) demands on cars. Ricardo blew his engine on lap 49 and I cooked it just one lap later. It was disappointing, but I only have myself to blame. I knew I was reving it too much on one spot. And that's exactly where the motor eventually gave up.
Start of the season with FA11 was way better than I expected. Qualifying the car for both races is more than what I was hoping for. Surviving Phoenyx on P9 might be the best result for the whole season and racing here on Interlagos proved to be fun, even at the back of the field. Can't wait for FA12.
And again, kudos to Niklas and Luke and congratulations for pushing FA11 to P12. Amazing drive!
