Ultimate '90s dancefloor banger:
NDW, love it or loathe it... The former. Songs of the NDW got airplay in our (non German speaking) part of the country, and I quite like it. [...]
When it comes to Neue Deutsche Welle, its a bit ... difficult. On one hand, they dusted off german music, which was absolutely overdue, and some of that stuff went viral, not just in Germany, but all over the world. Falco, Fehlfarben, Trio, the Humpe sisters, for exampe. Nena topped the US charts, IIRC. New ideas, new harmonies, new concepts, the topics, so far, so good.
And then, there are the late folks that came into the NDW-game, and that stuff was silly for silliness sake, ridiculous, embarrasing. It lacked humour, the cryptic double entendres. Stuff that immediately occupied the radios during carnival, probably it only makes sense with enough alcohol. Codo by DÖF is one of those examples I still find stupid as Eff and am most happy not to be disturbed with. But then, if you grow up in the middle of it, you might have a different look at it than when you can look at it from outside

The melody stuck in my head when I heard it, but I'll gladly admit it's erm... not the most refined song of the decade.
And not being a native German speaker, I'm probably missing the double entendres you refer too.

Falco was austrian I grew up in the 70s and 80s, my adolescence was the late 80s and early 90s so I got to witness the peak of great music and then the downhill run from dance to the stupid shitty only-drug-driven acid and nonesense electronics when everything imploded big time - Social and musically-wise. So I have mixed feelings about much of that music, some of it was indeed great but the dark side of how it slowly became a caricature of itself somehow still hurts. Looking back now, I only wish I could relive those 80s, I think we missed too much of them because everything was so fucking awesome that it felt natural. We just thought back then it could only get better ... but it just didn´t.

Joachim Witt's 'Goldener Reiter'
is about a guy who ends up in psychiatry with schizophrenia. According to Witt, the song is also a criticism of capitalism.
Trio's 'Da Da Da'
often misinterpreted as a nonsense song is actually deconstructing Schlager music both in content ("I don't love you, you don't love me"), as well as song structure.

We just thought back then it could only get better ... but it just didn´t. I was never into rave/techno, I always considered it to lack finesse and I hate those synths, but I always admired the colourfulness, the flamboyence of these guys. Probably I envied them because that part always was and still is mostly absent in my personality. I was always the 'oh, you're there, too' kind of person. And I already had a rather eclectic taste back then, even though stome stuff made it into my collection which I'm shaking my head about nowadays Once the bands from Bristol rolled in, I was hooked!
Yeah, I remember the time of that most annoying children's disco/Eurodance/-trash stuff played everywhere in the '90s, with the one or other occassional gem inbetween. Most stuff is happily forgotten for the most part. Every genre goes downhill once the industry senses a potential...

When the admin team had to decide who'd get the #5 Williams.
... who to put in the Zakspeeds ...
... the second Minardi ...
And the Haas-Lola, which, just like in the song, isn't what it says on the tin.

How many of you had ever heard of Halo James?
One hit wonders, but still awesome to listen to. A really danceable song, grab your beloved one and follow the rythm ....
