Detroit for me was the toughest race of the year. Long, blind curves and wall, many walls.
I qualified exactly where I wanted, slightly ahead of the slowest cars and, conservatively, started the race.
I managed to start well and had an initial dispute with Alberto Júnior in the first corner which, thanks to the engine, I managed to overtake in the small straight and my car was with good speed which made me pass another car in the braking for the T2 corner. Okay, Pagiola was right in front of me and Jonatan was pressing, in my head there was something saying all the time "keep calm".
Then, another short straight and poor Minardi from Pagiola can do nothing to stop my engine that was pushing hard even with little momentum, now I was already in P17 and Adam in front of me started to run away. Initially I tried to accompany him, but the prudence of running a long race with chronic pain in my arms (taking care of a grandson causes this at my age) made me look for a safe pace.
From then on, my suffering started, Pagiola in a precise pilotage pushed me forward, I tried to maintain a difference between 3 to 5 seconds from him, but Minardi and its driver were faster in the curves and I was doing the final sector with more prudence than it should, especially the gymkhana before the pit straight.
On lap 20, the leaders arrived and I was careful giving space, losing 1 to 3 seconds in each overtaking received and in that Pagiola was again putting pressure, sometimes even threatening.
Then Fernandez arrived at a pace that I couldn't fight, I still tried to hold the position but he was much faster and I let him go without wasting time for both of us.
Many cars were left on the way, accidents and engines on fire and I was gaining positions, without further disputes and cooking my mind to keep my concentration. He was already happy to finish the race and P6 was impossible to find, Brian was much faster until the 2 Ferrari got in the way with his engines on fire.
P6 was a victory on the track that I most feared not being able to finish the race.
Congratulations to Grant on his recovery for a superb victory and to Vadim who became a magician with Tyrrell.
Another perfect broadcast with professionalism and excellent comments.
Congratulations to ISO Team, the satisfaction of running here surpasses each race.
